Family post party

This post is a Two Part Series. Why? Because Friday night and Saturday morning of the party were filled with Urgent Care visits and lots of medication. This first part will tell you what did happen. Part two will cover what didn't happen (on my OCD list)
The bottom line (before you think I'm an over-the-top-mom) is that I love entertaining. While I'm not the chef in the family, I love getting the house ready, making a party playlist, setting up a slideshow, picking out invites, arranging flowers....etc. I made a promise to M that I will not do this for every birthday...I mean, won't we be at Monkey Joe's in a few years anyways? But a good old fashioned house party is my absolute favorite. We work hard on our homes and yards so why not celebrate that hard work with having friends over?

I picked a Cowboy theme for Ford's 1st birthday because it was cute, had plenty of decor ideas, and the invites I found on Etsy were so freaking adorable. Plus we could serve BBQ and beer and it would be a fun party!

So here we go!

A dear friend told me about this amazing cake lady here in Charlotte. Her phone number will cost you $20...just kidding. You will have to bribe me for it with more than that!

How cute are my sauce labels? NOT. I wanted to have a little NC map with a heart over Western NC for Tomato sauce and a heart over Easter NC for Vinegar sauce. That didn't happen and the sauces never made it into the bottles! But Dad did bring sauce from 12 Bones in Asheville and it was killer.

Here are the kiddos gift bags. I found the bags at the Dollar Store. I can't say enough about the Dollar Store! Having a party that includes a primary color as part of the decor helps too. Inside was a rubber ducky dressed as a cowboy and some silly sunglasses. Probably my craftiest endeavor was the labels. I wanted to order them off Etsy but instead I bought a stamp from Paper Source and downloaded a font. Impressed right? Using my old Rockbrook skills!

How To Save Marriage | Step-Parenting Tips

Step parenting is very common these days but that does not mean that we are aware of how to make it work and the worse thing is; it will affect your family. You may have found that ?yours, mine and ours? is really a very amusing movie plot but it happens in a real-life home, it will not make a very harmonious one.

If you have read any ?stepmother? stories when you were younger (and you probably would have), you would associate them with being wicked. That is probably one of the reasons why being a stepparent is never an easy task, regardless of how good your intentions are and it does not matter if you are step-dad or a step-mum. Chances are, you would be viewed as the enemy!

Especially when you have older kids, children will try to carve out their territory the moment the ?new parent? arrives in the picture. Very soon, you will find that battle lines are drawn, with the kids making numerous attempts to defeat their stepparent. This will result in an emotional challenge for the biological parent who will be torn between the new spouse and the children.

If it is of any relief for you, most families with step-parents will face a similar situation. In fact, the psychotherapists even have a name for it, ?triangulation? because the kids, spouse and you are triangulating on every issue, just like a triangle with three sides. You can expect to see upheavals in the home most of the time and getting out of such a situation is going to be a great challenge.

However, if you love your spouse and want to save your marriage, you will have to understand the situation and find a way out. First, you have to know that your kids will know the power of ?divide and conquer?. As such, when parents divorce and they get a new parent, the game can get intense, especially at the beginning.

Kids are smart, so they will know that they stand a better chance of driving the new parent out by creating division between the two of you. Since ?blood is thicker than water?, it is not surprising that the biological parent will naturally want to jump to the defense of their child. But will only result in a spousal and parental conflict, which can be detrimental to the relationship between the couple.

As such, it is vital that before the stepparent comes into the home, the couple must come to an agreement on what they will do should they disagree on parenting methods. It is always best that couples have a common ground when they face conflicts in parenting. However, even if they cannot agree, they should never let the children know and settle their disagreements in private instead. Otherwise, once the children are aware that they have divided you, you are in for more ?attacks? from them!

Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that your kids are predators but their intention is to unite their biological parents. They do not want any ?intruders? in the home, and in this case, the stepparent is the ?intruder?. At least, that is in the eyes of your kids and if you want to win them over, it is going to take time but in the meantime, you and your new spouse have to work closely together in order to make the marriage work.

There should also be house rules that you and your spouse set so that any parent can apply the consequences when the rules are broken. In this way, there will not be any discrepancies and it will also give the stepparent more authority when there is backup by the biological parent. Most importantly, there should be an agreement on who should discipline the kids when the need arises. By working closely together, it will make it easier for your children to understand that both of you mean well for them.

Your step family can only grow strong if your relationship with your spouse is strong and vice versa. Thus, if you want to save your marriage and ensure that your relationship stays strong, you will also have to work at uniting your step family. Start off by re-affirming your commitment with each other each day. That will help in strengthening your relationship.

Painkiller-dealing 'Candy Man' doctor sentenced

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. ? Officials at a St. Louis hospital on Thursday defended their actions in the case of a homeless woman who sought treatment for a sprained ankle and died in police custody after being arrested for refusing to leave the emergency room.

An autopsy determined that Anna Brown's death in a jail cell in September was caused by blood clots that formed in her legs and migrated to her lungs, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The newspaper also obtained surveillance footage of the woman's final moments. In the video, officers are seen carrying Brown into a jail cell. The cell door closes and Brown is heard moaning and crying.

Brown's family says authorities treated the 29-year-old mother of two unfairly and have hired a St. Louis-based lawyer, Keith Link. Link did not respond to telephone messages from msnbc.com on Thursday.

St. Mary's Health Center says its staff followed medical guidelines and performed appropriate tests, acknowledging the ?outrage being expressed in this tragic event.?

?Unfortunately, even with appropriate testing using sophisticated technology, blood clots can still be undetected in a small number of cases,? according to a statement released by St. Mary's Health Center on Thursday. ?The sad reality is that emergency departments across the country are often a place of last resort for many people in our society who suffer from complex social problems that become medical issues when they are not addressed. It is unfortunate that it takes a tragic event like this to call attention to a crisis in our midst.?

Police have said officers had no way of knowing Brown's dire condition.

Brown went to three hospitals complaining of leg pain in the days leading up to her death, including her visit to St. Mary's that led to her arrest for trespassing. She was wheeled out in handcuffs after a doctor said she was healthy enough to be locked up.

Brown had been struggling after a series of devastating setbacks, family say.

'Starting to? make progress'
A New Year's Eve tornado in 2010 destroyed Brown's home in north St. Louis home, the Post-Dispatch reported. She and her two children moved to Berkeley, a St. Louis suburb, and she lost her job at a sandwich shop soon afterward, the Post-Dispatch said.

According to the Post-Dispatch, her utilities were shut off because she stopped paying her bills, and after a child welfare agent who visited the home in April found a feces-filled toilet, burn marks on the floor where she had lit fires to keep warm and other distressing signs, Brown was arrested for parental neglect. Police reported at the time that she seemed confused, the newspaper reported.

Her mother, Dorothy Davis, received custody of Brown's children on the condition that Brown couldn't also live with them, and Brown's home was condemned, the newspaper reported. She lived in four homeless shelters from May until September, according to the Post-Dispatch.

Brown joined the St. Louis Empowerment Center, a drop-in center for the mentally ill, the newspaper reported.

"She was just starting to make progress," Kevin Dean, a peer specialist at the center, told the Post-Dispatch.

Dean and another staff member at the drop-in center recalled hearing Anna Brown say she hurt her ankle.

Davis, who said Brown called every day to check on her children, said she wants answers about her?daughter's death.

"If the police killed my daughter, I want to know. If the hospital is at fault, I want to know," Davis told the Post-Dispatch. "I want to be able to tell her children why their mother isn't here."

Free agency has come screeching to a halt, but there are still some interesting names available on the open market.

Here?s a breakdown of the top ten players left unsigned on the PFT Hot 100.

1. Offensive tackle Marcus McNeill ? Released by San Diego on March 13, McNeill visited the Lions a day later but left without a contract. He was rumored to have meetings lined up with the Falcons and Chiefs, but they apparently fell through. While McNeill has two Pro Bowls and 82 starts at a premium NFL position on his resume at age 28, medical concerns have clearly hurt McNeill?s market value.

2. Offensive tackle Demetrius Bell ? Bell has drawn interest from the Redskins and Cardinals, and will visit the Packers later this week. Like McNeill, Bell is a 28-year-old starting-caliber left tackle who?s been plagued by injuries. Bell?s medical concerns aren?t as significant as McNeill?s, however, and it would be surprising if he wasn?t signed soon.

3. Linebacker David Hawthorne ? A beastly run defender, Hawthorne?s market appeared to be established when Stephen Tulloch (Lions) and Curtis Lofton (Saints) were signed. Hawthorne remains available, however, after visits with Detroit and New Orleans proved to be leverage plays by those teams. Adam Caplan did report on Tuesday that the Seahawks and Hawthorne ?continue to be in communication,? so perhaps he?ll re-sign with Seattle.

4. Linebacker London Fletcher ? Fletcher still hasn?t signed, but it?s been widely assumed that he?ll head back to D.C. Perhaps that?s why no other teams have seriously inquired. As Alper noted a couple of days ago, league-imposed cap penalties against the Redskins have affected negotiations with Fletcher.

5. Defensive end Andre Carter ? Carter racked up double-digit sacks in 14 games last year, but he hasn?t been signed because he?s still ?limping heavily? after a late-season quadriceps tear. Carter should find work quickly once he?s healthy.

6. Defensive end Matt Roth ? The Bengals are Roth?s only known free-agent visit, and their interest seems to have cooled after signing twin draft busts Jamaal Anderson and Derrick Harvey. Roth isn?t a bad pass rusher and sets the edge as a run defender. He can also play linebacker in a 3-4. It?s only a matter of time before he catches on somewhere.

7. Defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin ? Franklin?s career peak was receiving the 49ers? franchise tag in 2010. His 2011 market was surprisingly slow, and he?s now going on age 32. Franklin is coming off a disappointing season in New Orleans, struggling for playing time. The 2011 game tape may be turning off teams.

8. Offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie ? The Giants have already cut ties publicly with McKenzie, their starting right tackle since the 2005 campaign. Going on age 33, he may have to wait for training camp to be signed.

9. Defensive end Luis Castillo ? A productive but injury-prone 3-4 defensive end, Castillo has visited the Patriots and Chiefs in free agency, but likely was offered only the veteran?s minimum after missing all but one game last season. The Chargers also have an offer on the table to keep him. Castillo is only 28 years old with plenty of starts on his resume.

10. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards ? The Jets have expressed some interest in the top wide receiver left on the market, but it?s believed Edwards is still rehabbing from the knee surgery that forced the 49ers to give up on him in December. Edwards is 29 years old. He can separate from defensive backs with the best of ?em when healthy and is an underrated blocker, but untimely drops and off-field concerns have tarnished his image as an NFL player.

Motorola Xoom WiFi gets first official dibs on Android 4.0.4

Tales of leaked Android 4.0.4 builds have been told for months, and we've even heard whispers of 4.0.5 coming to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the very near future. We still haven't seen any official firmware rollouts of either version, until now. Owners of the Motorola Xoom WiFi should be getting their hands on an update to 4.0.4 -- also known as build IMM76 -- any time now. According to an email from Moto announcing the update, the latest refresh offers improved stability, quicker screen rotation, better phone number recognition, camera and image quality improvements, enhancements to Microsoft Exchange and even a new setting that lets you choose whether you want the power button to lock the device immediately or not.

If you aren't seeing the update hit yet, Droid-Life has reported that the file is available for download thanks to XDA, but it appears that some users have experienced errors when attempting it. So if you're feeling adventurous and don't want to wait for the OTA download, feel free to give it a shot. You'll need to drag the file into a USB stick, plug it in using a USB host cable and boot your Xoom into stock recovery.

Friends fear for safety of man who shot Florida teen

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - Friends and supporters spoke out on Sunday on behalf of the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager in Florida, saying he fears for his safety after receiving death threats.

George Zimmerman, who has claimed he shot Trayvon Martin on February 26 in self-defense, is staying at an undisclosed location after widely circulated death threats and word of a $10,000 bounty to find him, said legal adviser Craig Sonner, who said he would represent Zimmerman if charges are filed.

Fury over the shooting in the gated community of Sanford, Florida, of the 17-year-old boy, who was carrying an iced tea and a bag of Skittles candy, and the lack of an arrest or charges prompted demonstrations nationwide calling for authorities to take action.

On Sunday, supporters of Martin staged events at churches, where congregants were encouraged to wear hoodies, or hooded sweatshirts, like the one he was wearing when he was killed.

At Middle Collegiate Church in New York City, the minister and members of the congregation wore hoodies, pulling their hoods over their heads during prayers at a crowded service that made repeated reference to Martin's killing as a symptom of the discrimination felt by young black Americans.

Jacqui Lewis, the church's senior minister, gave a sermon in which she said people were "fed up with centuries of race-related hatred and fear in this country."

"We will not rest until this disease called racism is stamped out," she said, calling for Americans to mix more frequently with people from different backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures.

She asked congregants to mail packets of Skittles candy to the Sanford Police Department and post pictures of themselves on the Internet wearing their hoodies and holding signs saying: "I am not dangerous. Racism is."

Martin was shot dead after Zimmerman, 28, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch captain, believed the young man walking through the gated community looked suspicious. Zimmerman followed him and an altercation ensued.

Friends of Zimmerman, who has not spoken to the media, said he was extremely upset about the shooting.

"I mean, he took a man's life and he has no idea what to do about it. He's extremely remorseful about it," said his friend Joe Oliver.

"What makes all these people who are threatening George any better than the person they think he is?" he added. "You've got all these people wanting to lynch the man, and they don't know the whole story.

"There are huge gaps that are being filled in and interpreted without evidence," he said.

A candlelight vigil was planned for Sunday evening in Sanford, where civil rights activist Jesse Jackson was slated to appear. A rally of Martin supporters was also planned in Seattle.

While state and federal investigations are under way, the shooting has put a focus on so-called "Stand your Ground" laws, adopted first in Florida in 2005 and in at least 16 other states since.

Opponents call them "Shoot First" laws that put the burden on prosecutors to prove a shooting was not self-defense.

Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, called on Sunday for a Justice Department investigation into "Stand your Ground" laws to determine if they increase violence and prevent prosecutions of crimes.

"They're all new. They've been passed very, very quickly and I think the states who passed them, if they find out the real facts, they may decide to repeal them," Schumer said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

"I have a lot of faith in our police and in our sheriffs and I don't like a move to vigilantism," Schumer said.

The incident has become part of the presidential campaign as well. Republican Rick Santorum, also on "Face the Nation," called it "a heinous act."

"We need to focus on being there to be supportive and for the family that's going through this tragedy," he said.

President Barack Obama talked about the case on Friday, saying it made him "think about my own kids."

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said of Martin, who was African-American.

Sonner said Zimmerman fears he is in danger. He cited a document circulating that has Zimmerman's photo with the words "Wanted Dead or Alive."

"I think to not take that seriously would be a mistake," he said.

Florida Governor Rick Scott on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday promised a thorough investigation and said he had faith in the state attorney leading it.

Scott also said he was not aware of any requests for protection from Zimmerman, but would provide it if asked.

"If he feels unsafe, we'll make sure nothing happens to him," Scott said.

Sonner has said Zimmerman suffered a broken nose, a gash to his head and had grass stains on his shirt after the confrontation with Martin. Oliver said details about the altercation remain unclear, but he said Zimmerman told him he was not the aggressor.

The New Black Panther Party announced on Saturday it was offering a $10,000 bounty for Zimmerman.

"We will reward that individual or group of people who take George Zimmerman into custody and we will deliver him to the authorities. They would be better off holding him than letting him out on the street because there is an angry mindset among black people," said Mikhail Muhammad of the New Black Panther Party, a black political organization that takes its name from the radical movement of the 1960s.

1: Be willing to demonstrate revenue growth. First and foremost, business stories are about business. And since business is about how much money you?re making, you have to be willing to discuss revenue, sales and profits to demonstrate growth. Far too many times a CEO will approach me and say he/she wants to get a story written about them but they aren?t willing to disclose revenue figures.

2: Illustrate how you are growing your employee head count. Making money is a big part of the equation but it is still just a part. You must also show that your company is growing through staff headcount. This can be overall staff increases or employee growth in a certain division.

3: Show how your new product/service divisions support merging business trends. Are you growing in the areas of mobile technology, cloud computing, social media? Read stories in the media to find out which trends are making headlines and attach your growth story to those trends.

4: Offer statistics that support trend information. The Citrix story was about growth in their mobile technology division, and in the story Citrix demonstrated how certain areas of growth were increasing by specific percentages. It is important to also offer up industry facts, statistics and insight where possible.

5: Provide the reporter with analysts or outsiders who will address your growth. Speaking of insight, help the reporter by providing them with people outside the company they can speak to in an effort to gain third-party insight into your company?s growth. These people are most likely going to be analysts who have been following your company for some time. And if you don?t know who these people are, back up a step and build some relationships before you pitch your story.

6: Describe something colorful about the person leading the division or company. Having said everything above, what separates a good business story and pitch from a great one is the ability to paint the leader of a company as a very colorful person with interesting characteristics. Even business stories like to tell the inside story of the person leading the company, including hobbies and passions shared outside the office.

7: Explain the impact of your growth/product/services on your customers, and provide access to a few for comment. You?ve heard this many times before on the UnderstandingMarketing.com website.
